PHILANTHROPIC ADVISing
HDI bridges the philanthropic and Haitian nonprofit and social enterprise sectors to help philanthropists and investors have greater impact with their funding in Haiti. We leverage cultural competence and field expertise to provide thoughtful guidance and intermediary services, including:
Grants Administration
HDI helps funders reach credible local organizations and empower communities with small grants. We can connect foundations and individual donors with Haitian nonprofits who can use modest financial support in impactful ways to advance locally-driven initiatives to meet community needs.
As a Grant Intermediary, we will vet potential grantees, administer grants, and monitor and evaluate the impact of the funding.
Examples of our work:
We can also pair grant funding with capacity building support, so donors can get resources to poor communities and build the capacity of the communities’ leaders in the process.
Support to Local Partners
Funders may partner with HDI to enroll their grantees or local affiliates in our comprehensive cohort capacity building program.
HDI can also support the organizational development of local partners by providing flexible, targeted assistance and nonprofit incubation services that meet them where they are and help them get to the next level of effectiveness. For example, we have worked with funders and Haitian nonprofits to:
develop and implement improved financial management systems to enable the local organization to receive grant funds directly rather than as a subcontractor to an international NGO
undertake the legal process to obtain registration as a Haitian nonprofit organization
obtain and outfit office space and create a website.
Guidance on Donor Trips
We guide individuals, family foundations, large institutional donors and others on trips to Haiti to:
visit current or potential grantees
meet tenacious and passionate grassroots leaders
see inspiring examples of effective philanthropy, and
understand the country better and experience its vibrant culture and exquisite beauty.
Our trips aim to change perceptions about philanthropy in Haiti and help donors refine their philanthropic strategies. We provide historical and cultural perspective on Haiti’s development and connect donors directly with local partners. Trips are customized to focus on the individual interests of each donor.
